An Alternative View

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible is the complete King James, with commentary and cross-references for most verses. Its noble purpose is to show how dumb they think Bible is, but it does have links to pro-Bible responses to SAB's claims, so kudos to them for inviting dissent and debate.

(If anyone knows of a pro-Bible Web site that does this, please drop me a line and I'll add it to this page.)

Face the Facts

Wikipedia is an absolutely fabulous resource for learning more about your own religion, that of your neighbour, and the religions from all over the world!

There is a vast array of information on the basic tenets of all theistic faiths: Creation Stories, Global Floods, various Messiahs and biblical scripture that you probably never even knew existed! The banned Old-Testament books are called Apocrypha and the banned New-Testament books are known as Gnostic Gospels. Not nearly as entertaining to read as Being Gay is Disgusting, mind you, but equally informative! Just keep a close eye on the references, because sometimes an 'authoritative source' turns out to be a heavy-Christian or heavy-skeptic site, and not nearly as neutral as it should be. Always check your sources!

Ignosticism

Here's an interesting perspective I discovered recently. "Ignostics" take the view that as there is no real definition for "God" (capital 'G'), then phrases like "Do you believe in God" are about as meaningful as "Do you like wobble-hopping snarf-blats." Unless an agreed-upon definition for "God" is found, ignostics just don't even attempt to answer the question! I think they're just being difficult, but they do seem to have a point...

The Jesus Wiki

For those of you who prefer a more Christian slant on your wiki-based research, this site is for you. Theopedia is just like Wikipedia, except with about 9,000,000 fewer articles, and every one of its 1,800 articles is about religious matters. The site's Statement of Faith is to be expected, but it unfortunately prohibits non-Christian biblical scholars from adding content, so every biblical notion is presented as unquestioned and unquestionable fact. Tsk tsk. Also excluded are other non-Christians with relevant information, such as Muslims who have a Quran-supported position on Jesus. In their defence, the research they've done for some articles is second-to-none!

Once again, though, we have a claim that Holy Scripture is "...without error in the original manuscripts" (emphasis added). I still don't know how anyone can make this claim with a straight face, given that the original manuscripts haven't existed for centuries, if not millenia! Anyone who would care to clarify is welcome to do so.

Searching for God

Look, if you really want to get to any kind of certainty as to what the original holy books once said, you really need to cross-reference a few different translations, as I did in several niggly verses of Being Gay is Disgusting.

Bible Gateway lets you look up any chapter or verse of the Bible, and select any of a hundred Bible versions to read! To illustrate the entertaining diversity of the translations, I recommend Lev 16:8, Deut 32:8 and, of course, Lev 18:22.

Now in eVil eBooks

The Bible comes in many flavours. The most popular flavour, vanilla, is also known as the King James Version, or KJV, and was written a billion years ago. Here's a free PDF version for you, courtesy of the Witnesses of Jehovah. It's a hard read, even by Biblical standards, but on the up-side, it's the only English version where God talks about unicorns!

Owning this book makes you more attractive. True story.
